2ND ANNUAL ART & ESSAY CONTEST

“Who is my neighbor?”

Contest Theme

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each
individual is unique, and recognizing that individual differences exist all the time. These can be
along the dimensions of race, gender, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious
beliefs, political beliefs, etc. Diversity exists in NJ at the micro level in our neighborhoods and
classrooms.

Who is my neighbor? What are the rules of engagement these days, when neighbors hardly know
each other? We need to remind people how to be good neighbors, how to build friendships, how
to share, and thus how to be a good citizen. Neighbors should be proactive, should meet and talk
to each other, discover similarities and differences of each other, and appreciate each other.

Here are some topics that may give ideas (not necessarily a comprehensive list):
CONNECTIVITY
Social media bridges gaps, fostering global understanding and collaboration.
EMPATHY
Sharing stories promotes compassion, inspiring collective efforts towards peace.
DIALOGUE
Open conversations on social platforms facilitate conflict resolution and tolerance.
AWARENESS
Social media amplifies marginalized voices, shedding light on critical peacebuilding issues.
MOBILIZATION
Online platforms enable grassroots movements to drive positive change.
INCLUSIVITY
Social media fosters diverse perspectives, nurturing a more harmonious society.
